6-week Somatic Practice Group: Slowing down from the hustle and bustle culture around us

  • Colorado United States of America (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Note: This group will be starting on Thursday 11/3/22 at 5:30pm Mountain Standard Time - MST. We meet live for 6 weekly sessions via zoom. This will be an closed group designed to learn and practice together to support our individual and collective wellbeing and boundaries. Full dates: 11/3/22, 11/10/22, 11/17/22, 12/1/22, 12/8/22, 12/15/22. (no session on 11/24/22).

What is the intent?

We’ve been living through economic, workforce, environmental, health, and relationship uncertainties, and it is normal if you have felt demoralized and overwhelmed. In the context of historical/current violence, polarization, racism, borders, and systems that criminalize populations and fail to meet people with dignity, you may be asking, “what am I missing that can make a difference with the impact I am working towards?” or “how can I honor my needs, show up for people, and meet deliverables without sacrificing something?

When things don’t make sense, it can be helpful to remember that trauma and oppression disrupt the relationship to oneself, each other, and the environment. We are living within a society that encourages you to segment yourself: to prioritize your thoughts while disconnecting from your body and feelings. The opportunity in slowing down and developing a somatic practice is that your body (a domain of our thinking, feeling, acting, sensing, etc.) holds intelligence, has memory, and can be a guiding presence for connection to yourself and life around you (Source: Strozzi).

Somatics is a methodology, path, or change theory by which you can embody transformation individually and collectively (Source: Generative Somatics). Through developing awareness of your internal experiences, such as sensation and breath, you can support yourself in taking actions that feel aligned to your purpose. Change doesn’t always come merely from thinking differently, it comes from shifting what you can feel, know, and move towards/away from.

This may be for you if you:

  • Experience/have experienced burnout

  • Work for and/or support social enterprises or nonprofits

  • Engage in organizational culture work, community organizing, consulting, coaching

  • Care about diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in the workplace and building positive organizational culture

  • Share these values: play, repair, liberation, healing, community

  • Want to build somatic awareness and skills

What is the format?

In the sessions, we will learn about somatic theory, developing embodied practices, and building connection amongst each other. Topics: intention-setting, community-building, beginnings/endings, navigating transitions, our relationship to healing, progress over perfection, feeling our feelings, and making requests/declines.

As a bonus, you will be also introduced to the Intercultural Development Continuum and have a chance to consider ways to become an ally to each other. Participants will be invited to take the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and receive a group profile.

By participating and engaging, you will:

  • know your boundaries better

  • develop a habitual centering practice to support you in returning to a place of openness, presence, and connection

  • connect with a community of people committed to building a somatic practice

  • discern ways you can interrupt overwhelm

  • learn practices to support your boundaries and wellbeing

  • develop curiosity

What if you can’t attend a session?

We will be recording the sessions and they will be made available for participants if you need to miss a session.
